Activities

Dunster Tables

Informal and congenial discussions over lunch or dinner, tables occur nearly every night of the week and are organized by tutors and/or students. Recurring tables are those with a linguistic focus in French, German, or Spanish, as well as the Dunster Roundtable (with pizza!) where current events are discussed. Tables are frequently organized for visits by professors and guest lecturers. Harvard faculty are always welcome to eat in our dining hall; feel free to organize a table and invite your favorite professor to join. Look at the weekly calendar in the Mooseletter for the schedule of that week's tables.

The House Committee

Dunster House Committee (HoCo) is the student organization for maintaining and developing the unique character and spirit of Dunster House. The Dunster community is a tight-knit group that really does live, work, play, and learn together to a degree not found anywhere else. HoCo's duties are twofold: first, overseeing House life, and second, working with the Masters and the Senior Tutor to focus on the residential concerns of students. All student residents of Dunster House are automatically members of Dunster HoCo. Active membership is demonstrated through attendance at meetings and participation in the organization and execution of projects and events.

Each December, the students of December elect two Co-Chairs, a Treasurer, a Secretary, a Publicity Chair, and two Social Chairs, who serve from January to January. Dunster HoCo is responsible for the continuance of traditions as well as the institution of new ideas and practices reflecting the diverse and growing interests of the changing body of students. From the Goat Roast to House formals, HoCo plans all House-wide social events. Annual Dunster events include:

  • Sophomore Outing: The House welcomes Sophomores with a day of exploration of the natural environs of Massachusetts.
  • Harvard-Yale Tailgate: Food, drink, and music all day at the Game.
  • Winter Formal: A break from the pre-vacation grind to dance the night away.
  • Action Auction: Residents volunteer services from the practical to the exotic. Past auction items have included sculling lessons, homemade cookies, massages, ski trips…
  • Freshman Welcome: A delegation of Dunsterites treks to Annenberg, complete with Moose suit, Dunster flag, and a tricycle or two to welcome with t-shirts and other goodies the freshmen who have just won the housing lottery.
  • Goat Roast: A long-standing Dunster tradition. Stone tools provide a unique and educational preparation for a spring day of food, drinks, music, and games.
  • Spring Formal: Dunster's most elegant event. We bid farewell to graduating seniors and welcome the freshmen who will join us in the fall.

Other common activities include Happy Hours, courtyard movies, and seasonal cookouts. HoCo works all year to plan these and other events, and always welcomes new ideas, suggestions, and requests from students. Contact the co-chairs, Avery Cavanah (cavanah@fas) and Michael Coulter (mcoulter@fas)if you'd like to take part.

The Mooseletter, May 19, 2008

May 19, 2008

From the Office of the Resident Dean
Paulette Curtis

Last Mooseletter
It was with melancholy that I write my last Mooseletter! Like the seniors, I am a little nervous by what lays ahead, and hate leaving the Dunster House community behind. I have learned a lot, and have been truly blessed to serve here for 6 years. Special thanks go to the Porters, Nora Dahl, Joe O’Connor, Melanie Charette, Irshad Ahmad, the Dunster dining hall staff, and Carlos and the custodial team. Thanks for making my experiences here special and meaningful.

I am happy to pass the reins to Carlos Diaz Rosillo, who will ably serve as the next Allston Burr Resident Dean of Dunster House. Carlos has been a long-standing member of the House as a resident tutor, a teaching fellow in the government department and a one-term acting Resident Dean while I was on sabbatical. I cannot imagine a more perfect choice, and hope you will welcome him to the position in the coming weeks!

Issues for the Week:

Noise (suites, courtyard etc.,)
No parties or outdoor gatherings during reading or exam period, which lasts until May 23rd. For those of you who need to use the music practice rooms, please respect the limits and hours (from 10am to 7pm). These hours will be posted in the rooms themselves. Any infractions of the noise policy will be strictly addressed.

Also, please keep noise to a bare minimum in the courtyard in the evening hours. Voices carry!

Please note the following about exams……………………………
--If you are not able to complete your written work by the end of this week, the only way it can potentially be covered is by vote of the Administrative Board, which is not a guarantee and one that must have instructor support.

--Get to your exams on time! If you are a few minutes late for an exam, go anyway, and you may be accommodated. If you miss the exam altogether, please come by the office and let me know ASAP. You may be able to arrange a make-up exam, but this will depend on your instructor, who may or may not be willing to do this. The lesson is: go!

--If you are really ILL, and cannot physically take the exam, you have one of two options: In some cases the Registrar’s staff can administer examinations to students who have been admitted to Stillman Infirmary and who feel ready to take their exam within the 24-hour period following the scheduled time OR you might petition the Administrative Board to take a makeup exam in October. To do this, you must be seen by a UHS clinician within the 24-hour period before the exam. Either way, consult me about the best course to take if you are really ill.

--If you are a graduating senior who misses a final, contact me immediately to arrange a special make-up exam. Again, this is not a guarantee, but something we would need to discuss together.

Exams schedule: Available on the registrar’s web page at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu. Lists exam times and locations for spring term courses.

Grades will be posted for courses for the spring term AFTER June 8th, 2007.

Have a good summer, and to those of you matriculating in a few short weeks, may you enjoy the company of friends in your remaining time. Be safe! Be Happy!

As all of you know, reading period officially begins on May 3 so no parties will be allowed from May 3rd (this past Saturday) until the very end of exam period. If you have two exams at the exact same time (this does not include two exams at different times on the same day), or if you have an exam scheduled at a time which conflicts with a religious observance, contact the Exams Office, 5-1542, as soon as possible.
