Mooseletter

The Mooseletter, May 19, 2008

May 19, 2008

From the Office of the Resident Dean
Paulette Curtis

Last Mooseletter
It was with melancholy that I write my last Mooseletter! Like the seniors, I am a little nervous by what lays ahead, and hate leaving the Dunster House community behind. I have learned a lot, and have been truly blessed to serve here for 6 years. Special thanks go to the Porters, Nora Dahl, Joe O’Connor, Melanie Charette, Irshad Ahmad, the Dunster dining hall staff, and Carlos and the custodial team. Thanks for making my experiences here special and meaningful.

I am happy to pass the reins to Carlos Diaz Rosillo, who will ably serve as the next Allston Burr Resident Dean of Dunster House. Carlos has been a long-standing member of the House as a resident tutor, a teaching fellow in the government department and a one-term acting Resident Dean while I was on sabbatical. I cannot imagine a more perfect choice, and hope you will welcome him to the position in the coming weeks!

Issues for the Week:

Noise (suites, courtyard etc.,)
No parties or outdoor gatherings during reading or exam period, which lasts until May 23rd. For those of you who need to use the music practice rooms, please respect the limits and hours (from 10am to 7pm). These hours will be posted in the rooms themselves. Any infractions of the noise policy will be strictly addressed.

Also, please keep noise to a bare minimum in the courtyard in the evening hours. Voices carry!

Please note the following about exams……………………………
--If you are not able to complete your written work by the end of this week, the only way it can potentially be covered is by vote of the Administrative Board, which is not a guarantee and one that must have instructor support.

--Get to your exams on time! If you are a few minutes late for an exam, go anyway, and you may be accommodated. If you miss the exam altogether, please come by the office and let me know ASAP. You may be able to arrange a make-up exam, but this will depend on your instructor, who may or may not be willing to do this. The lesson is: go!

--If you are really ILL, and cannot physically take the exam, you have one of two options: In some cases the Registrar’s staff can administer examinations to students who have been admitted to Stillman Infirmary and who feel ready to take their exam within the 24-hour period following the scheduled time OR you might petition the Administrative Board to take a makeup exam in October. To do this, you must be seen by a UHS clinician within the 24-hour period before the exam. Either way, consult me about the best course to take if you are really ill.

--If you are a graduating senior who misses a final, contact me immediately to arrange a special make-up exam. Again, this is not a guarantee, but something we would need to discuss together.

Exams schedule: Available on the registrar’s web page at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu. Lists exam times and locations for spring term courses.

Grades will be posted for courses for the spring term AFTER June 8th, 2007.

Have a good summer, and to those of you matriculating in a few short weeks, may you enjoy the company of friends in your remaining time. Be safe! Be Happy!

Hoorah for Reading Period!!!!
As all of you know, reading period officially begins on May 3 so no parties will be allowed from May 3rd (this past Saturday) until the very end of exam period. Along with parties, excessively loud music, late night courtyard conversations (even at a regular volume) are also discouraged. Thanks for your cooperation with this!

If you have two exams at the exact same time (this does not include two exams at different times on the same day), or if you have an exam scheduled at a time which conflicts with a religious observance, contact the Exams Office, 5-1542, as soon as possible. Final Exams

Double-check your exam schedule, so that you don't miss an exam. It's not true that you can miss one exam with no questions asked! If you are likely to be late to an exam, go anyway. If you miss an exam, talk to me ASAP. In Absentia Exams are not automatically granted. Please note that the Handbook, p. 84, states that requests for in absentia exams are due in the Registrar's Office no later than the last day of class, May 2, and require Administrative Board approval.

Exam Problems. If you have two exams on the same day, or if you have an exam scheduled at a time which conflicts with a religious observance of yours, contact the Exams Office, 5-1542, as soon as possible. The exams schedule is available on the registrar's web page at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu.

Parties and Party Forms (Change in Alcohol Policy. Note!)
There will be no suite parties allowed during reading and exam period, including the weekend following the last class on Friday. Public parties are limited to those thrown by the House (the formal and goat roast). Please respect this rule, as it means maintaining a quiet and harmonious environment for all during intense weeks of study.

Also, as many of you know, the College has recently changed its policies concerning the consumption of hard alcohol at private events, including suite parties. This means that you are no longer allowed to serve hard alcohol (whiskey, vodka etc.,) and must instead serve beer or wine, if you are of age, of course. Tutors will not sign off on party forms that indicate hard alcohol, and we will enforce this rule, as necessary. With the coming of reading and exam period, this is in many ways a moot point, since parties are not allowed anyway. Thanks for your cooperation with this!!!

Other appointments by arrangement: Call 5-2263 or e-mail dn-abrd@fas.harvard.edu

Tutor On-Call
The tutor(s) on-call for April 11-13 are Chris and Yunsun in 10D54. They can be reached at 3-5053.

In Absentia Exams are not automatically granted, so you must petition the Ad Board if you think you will need to take an exam in absentia. These petitions, which begin with a conversation with me and filling out a form, must be filed one month in advance. See page 71 of Handbook for Students.

A Term Off? Most importantly, speak with me about this, as we must file this information at the Registrar’s. If you have already decided to take the term off, remember to turn in your Leave of Absence petition and see Nora Dahl (J-38) about canceling your board contract (before June 11 to avoid fees). Students on Financial Aid should have an exit interview with your financial aid officer.

Submission of Similar Papers to More than One Course: If you would like to turn in the same or substantially the same paper to more than one course, you must get prior written permission of the instructors involved. Since each paper you turn in is expected to be written specifically for the assignment, failure to get written permission is deceptive, and students who do it are ordinarily required to withdraw by the Administrative Board. (Instructors do not always give permission, and they often expect a longer or somewhat different paper when they do give permission.) If you have any questions, please see me.

Plagiarism: Academic dishonesty in written work is a serious offense. Be sure you understand and follow all the proper rules of attribution and citation in writing term papers. When in doubt, consult with someone about use of sources, but don’t place your career at Harvard in jeopardy by cutting corners.

Commencement News
Graduating Seniors who haven’t filled out a degree application (which you should have received in your fall and/or spring registration packets) or changed their concentration should do so at the Requirements Office at the Registrar’s (20 Garden Street) ASAP. Friday, April 11 is the deadline for these two items. Call Melanie, if you are not sure.

Prizes and Awards. Graduate fellowships and prizes are listed in the House Commencement Program. To get recognition for your hard work throughout your academic travails here at Harvard, please inform Melanie of any awards or prizes you’ve won. Please don’t wait until the last minute; we can’t be held responsible for errors in omission. Only Harvard prizes and awards can be considered.

Non-Degree People Planning to take part in Commencement Activities: November 2007 or March 2008 degree candidates who would like to take part in this June’s Commencement activities should see Melanie IMMEDIATELY in the House Office J-39.

Not Attending Commencement Ceremony? If you do not plan to receive your diploma at the House Commencement in June let Melanie know as soon as possible.

Walking with another House? You cannot assume that you will be able to walk with another house. It is not usually a problem, but check with Melanie first, who will tell you what needs to happen.

LOTTERY LIVE - The Dunster House Lottery is scheduled for April 7-16. Nora put the lottery packets in your mailboxes. If you did not receive one but need one please let her know. She will be happy to answer questions, e-mail her at ndahl@fas.harvard,edu or let her know when you can drop by J-38 and see her.
Please read the packet, there is a lot of very useful information in there including the schedule of lottery events. Note: if you are late for an event or turning material in you will choose last in your lottery.

Students with medical concerns that could affect housing must consult with the Accessible Education Office (AEO), http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu, aeo@fas.harvard.edu, at 496-8707. This means that if you think you must live on a lower floor, in DeWolfe, or a particular room, etc. then the only way I can consider your needs is on a recommendation from the Accessible Education Office. They will advise you about the necessary clinical documentation which accompanies requests for exceptions to normal housing procedures. Please note that it is important that you begin to make arrangements as soon as possible. The House lottery will take place mid-April. You will need to do this each year that you are in residence in Dunster House. Please contact Nora, ndahl@fas.harvard.edu or 5-2262 after you obtain your documentation so that you may discuss your housing options with her.
