From the Office of the Resident Dean
Carlos E. Díaz Rosillo

Issues for the Week:

Noise and Parties
Just a reminder that there can be no parties or outdoor gatherings during reading or exam period, which goes through May 22. Any infractions of the noise policy will be promptly addressed. Thanks for your cooperation!

Please note the following about exams
--If you are not able to complete your written work within reading or exam period, you MUST get the permission of the Administrative Board for an extension of time. Instructors may only grant extensions within reading and exam period.
--Get as much rest as you can now and make sure to get to your exams on time!
--If you are a few minutes late for an exam, go anyway, as you may be accommodated. If you miss the exam altogether, please come by the House office and let us know ASAP. You may be able to arrange a make-up exam, but this will depend on your instructor, who may or may not be willing to do this. The lesson is: GO!
--If you are really ill, and cannot physically take the exam, you have one of two options: In some cases the Registrar’s staff can administer examinations to students who have been admitted to Stillman Infirmary and who feel ready to take their exam within the 24-hour period following the scheduled time OR you might petition the Administrative Board to take a makeup exam in October. To do this, you must be seen by a UHS clinician within the 24-hour period before the exam. Either way, consult me about the best course to take if you are really ill.
--If you are a graduating senior who misses a final, contact me immediately.

Good luck on all your final papers and exams!

Issues for the Week

Hoorah for Reading Period!!!
As all of you know, reading period officially began on May 2, so no parties are allowed from May 2 (this past Saturday) until the very end of exam period. The House tries to maintain an atmosphere of quiet and study during this time, so be sensitive to your neighbors in suites and public spaces. Along with parties, excessively loud music and late night courtyard conversations (even at a regular volume) are also not allowed. Thanks for your cooperation with this!

Exam Problems: If you have two exams at the exact same time (this does not include two exams at different times on the same day), or if you have an exam scheduled at a time which conflicts with a religious observance, contact the Exams Office, 5-1542, as soon as possible. The exams schedule is available on the registrar’s web page at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu.

Graduating Seniors: Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sending out information about Special Senior Open Hours so that I can briefly meet with each of you to catch up and talk about your post-graduation plans. I’ll also be asking you exactly how you’d like me to pronounce and read your names during Commencement. I want to get it just right!

Mooseletter, April 13, 2009

April 13, 2009

From the Office of the Resident Dean
Carlos E. Díaz Rosillo

Issues for the Week:

In Absentia Exams are not automatically granted, so you must petition the Ad Board if you think you will need to take an exam in absentia. Petitions must be filed at least one month in advance. Please see me if you have any questions.

Extensions: An extension beyond the end of Exam Period for the completion of written work can be granted ONLY by a vote of the Ad Board. There is no such thing, then, as an “incomplete” for written work for Harvard undergraduates.

Interested in Taking a Term Off? Please speak with me about this, as we must file this information with the Registrar’s. If you have already decided to take the term off, you can download the Housing Cancellation form at http://www.orl.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do and submit it to the Office of Residential Life in the basement of University Hall. Students on Financial Aid should have an exit interview with a financial aid officer.

Submission of Similar Papers to More than One Course: If you would like to turn in the same or substantially the same paper to more than one course, you must get prior written permission of the instructors involved. Since each paper you turn in is expected to be written specifically for the assignment, failure to get written permission is deceptive, and students who do it are ordinarily required to withdraw from the College by the Administrative Board. Instructors do not always give permission, and they often expect a longer or somewhat different paper when they do give permission to do this. If you have any questions, please see me.

Plagiarism: Academic dishonesty in written work is a serious offense. Be sure you understand and follow all the proper rules of attribution and citation in writing term papers. When in doubt, please ask your professors or teaching fellows about proper use of sources, but do not place your career at Harvard in jeopardy by cutting corners.

LOTTERY LIVE - The Dunster House Lottery is scheduled for the week of April 13th. Start thinking about who you would like to live with and where. The lottery packets should be in your mailboxes. If you do not receive one but need one please let Nora know. She will be happy to answer questions, e-mail her at ndahl@fas.harvard,edu or drop by J-38 and see her.

Students with medical concerns that could affect housing must consult with the Accessible Education Office (AEO), http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu, aeo@fas.harvard.edu, at 496-8707. This means that if you think you must live on a lower floor, in DeWolfe, or a particular room, etc. then the only way I can consider your needs is on a recommendation from the Accessible Education Office. They will advise you about the necessary clinical documentation which accompanies requests for exceptions to normal housing procedures. Please note that it is important that you begin to make arrangements as soon as possible. The House lottery will take place mid-April. You will need to do this each year that you are in residence in Dunster House. Please contact Nora, ndahl@fas.harvard.edu or 5-2262 after you obtain your documentation so that you may discuss your housing options with her. You must renew this documentation with the AEO every year that you are in residence in the Houses.

"Students with physical or mental health/disability-related issues pertaining to rooming assignments are encouraged to contact Accessible Education Office in advance of the rooming lottery in their Houses. AEO Director Louise Russell will review the necessary clinical documentation, guidelines for which may be found at http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu, meet with the student, and make a determination as to whether a student should be exempted from the lottery. Approved exemptions are made to the student making the request, not entire groups, although every effort is made to include friends in close proximity to each other, if not actually together. Each House has developed a housing assignment process which works best. If a student who has been denied a medical exemption by AEO actually receives a rooming assignment that coincidentally meets their clinical needs, they are not automatically eligible to receive such consideration the following year, but they are welcome to reapply.
