March 16, 2009

From the Office of the Senior Tutor
Carlos Diaz

Issues for the Week.

The SEVENTH MONDAY is Today, March 16th!

This is the last day upon which you may WITHDRAW from a class. Withdrawing from a class in which you are having exceeding difficulty is preferable to sticking with it just because you want it to remain on your transcript. As long as you do not need it to graduate (be careful, seniors), you may withdraw from it. Withdraw forms can be found outside the House Office. They must be signed by your concentration office first, then by me. The WD form must be brought to the House Office by Monday at 5pm.

SENIORS! Today, March 16th, is also the last day upon which seniors can submit secondary field forms. After filling out the secondary field form on-line, you MUST bring it to the department in which you are getting the secondary field for the appropriate signature, and then take it to the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m. This is a firm deadline and the Registrar won’t accept any late secondary field forms! Please consult the website on secondary fields for additional details.

Thesis Writers
Congratulations to those of you who have turned in theses already and continued luck to those entering the final stretches. Good luck!

Carlos’ office hours
Week of March 16-20

Monday, 3/16: 9-12, open
Wednesday, 3/18: 3-6, open
Friday , 3/20: 3-5, by appointment

If you have an appointment or want to chat, stop by Melanie’s’s office first (J-35), so that if I am with a student or on the phone I may have a heads-up about you being there. Thanks!

Other appointments by arrangement: Call 5-2263 or e-mail dn-abrd@fas.harvard.edu

Tutor On-Call
The tutor(s) on-call for the week of March 16 is Chris Catizone in 10DeWolfe 54. He can be reached at 3-5053.

Special Concentrations: The next deadline for applying for a Special Concentration is Friday, April 10, at 5 pm. This is quite an involved process so be sure to meet with Dr. Deborah Foster, Head Tutor for Special Concentrations, in University Hall, First Floor North very soon if you are considering such an undertaking. If you have any questions phone her assistant Stephanie Macaris at 5-0450.

Students with less than eight semesters and Advanced Standing students at Harvard who plan to graduate in June must fill out a degree application at the Requirements Office at the Registrar’s Office by April 10 or you will not be on the degree list or get your diploma.

Commencement Information about upcoming events during commencement week will be sent to families of prospective graduates either after spring break. This information will be followed by other mailings dealing with commencement tickets, and activities.

Graduating Seniors who haven’t filled out a degree application (that you should have received in your fall and spring registration packets) or changed their concentration should do so at the Requirements Office at the Registrar’s (20 Garden Street) ASAP. Friday, April 10 is the deadline for these two items. Check with Melanie first, if in doubt whether you have filed an application. Do not call the Registrar.

Prizes and Awards. Graduate fellowships and prizes are listed in the House Commencement Program. To get recognition for your hard work throughout your academic travails here at Harvard, please inform Bonnie of any awards or prizes you’ve won. We can’t guarantee that all prizes will be included, but we’ll try. Please don’t wait until the last minute, as it might not make it into the Commencement Program.

Non-Degree Students Planning to take part in Commencement Activities: November 2008 or March 2009 degree candidates who would like to take part (WALK) in this June’s Commencement activities should see/call Melanie IMMEDIATELY in the House Office J-35 (email at charette@fas.harvard.edu) or leave a message at 495-2263.

Commencement Hotel Reservations. Now’s a good time to make reservations for your out-of-town guests, if you haven’t made them already. Keep in mind that many hotels take reservations one year in advance.

Ames Award: Seniors, this is your chance to nominate your fellow classmates for the Ames Award. This award goes to one man and one woman, “who have shown energy in helping others.” Please submit recommendations, in letter-form, for the unsung hero or heroine of the Class of 2009 to the Ames Selection Committee, Classes and Reunions at 17 Dunster Street, 2nd floor.

Not Attending Commencement Ceremony? If you do not plan to receive your diploma at the House Commencement in June, let Melanie know early.

Ushers Needed For Dunster Commencement Ceremonies: Dunster House will need ushers to help with House Commencement activities June 2, 3, and 4. There is no pay, but you will be allowed to stay in the House an extra week and join in the fun. If you are interested, see/call Melanie or e-mail at charette@fas for details. It’s a good thing!

LOTTERY LIVE - The Dunster House Lottery is scheduled for the week of April 13th. Start thinking about who you would like to live with and where. Nora will put the lottery packets in your mailboxes in late March. If you do not receive one but need one please let her know. She will be happy to answer questions, e-mail her at ndahl@fas.harvard,edu or drop by J-38 and see her.

Students with medical concerns that could affect housing must consult with the Accessible Education Office (AEO), http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu, aeo@fas.harvard.edu, at 496-8707. This means that if you think you must live on a lower floor, in DeWolfe, or a particular room, etc. then the only way I can consider your needs is on a recommendation from the Accessible Education Office. They will advise you about the necessary clinical documentation which accompanies requests for exceptions to normal housing procedures. Please note that it is important that you begin to make arrangements as soon as possible. The House lottery will take place mid-April. You will need to do this each year that you are in residence in Dunster House. Please contact Nora, ndahl@fas.harvard.edu or 5-2262 after you obtain your documentation so that you may discuss your housing options with her. You must renew this documentation with the AEO every year that you are in residence in the Houses.

"Students with physical or mental health/disability-related issues pertaining to rooming assignments are encouraged to contact Accessible Education Office in advance of the rooming lottery in their Houses. AEO Director Louise Russell will review the necessary clinical documentation, guidelines for which may be found at http://aeo.fas.harvard.edu, meet with the student, and make a determination as to whether a student should be exempted from the lottery. Approved exemptions are made to the student making the request, not entire groups, although every effort is made to include friends in close proximity to each other, if not actually together. Each House has developed a housing assignment process which works best. If a student who has been denied a medical exemption by AEO actually receives a rooming assignment that coincidentally meets their clinical needs, they are not automatically eligible to receive such consideration the following year, but they are welcome to reapply.

From the Dining Hall
For Spring Break Dunster dining hall will close after dinner Friday, March 20 and re-open for breakfast on Tuesday March 31.

Issues For the Week

TODAY is Monday, March 2nd, the 5th Monday

THIS IS THE LAST DAY UPON WHICH A COURSE MAY BE ADDED/DROPPED FROM A STUDENT’S RECORD, and THE LAST DAY A COURSE MAY BE CHANGED FROM/TO A LETTER-GRADED OR PASS/FAIL.

Five Courses
Many of you are enrolled in five or more courses this term. This is a good time to review that choice. If you are having a difficult time balancing your courses; have never really been engaged in one of the courses you are taking and are behind in it; or have simply discovered, as a graduating senior or an eager sophomore, that taking that extra course you do not need has prevented you from doing other things, drop it! If you need to withdraw from a course at a later point, you will have until the 7th Monday, March 16th, but it is generally better to avoid that scenario if you can. Questions? Come by for Office Hours.

Reminder about Parties
Register, register, register. If you plan on having anything resembling a gathering with music, conversation, and possible alcohol, just register it. We will enforce this rule. And remember, quiet hours still apply to the seminar and music rooms after 11 p.m. each night.

Add-Drop, Change to Pass-Fail, Cross-Registration, and Other Forms

In the case of adding/dropping a course or changing it to or from pass-fail, you need the signatures of your concentration advisor and your instructor (you don’t need the instructor’s signature if you are only dropping a course). Cross-registration forms require that you get the signature of the instructor AND the registrar for that course, before getting my signature. Harvard Law School is the only exception; you must get my signature first before turning it into their registrar’s.

Adding a Course……..instructor signature, concentration adviser signature, then me
Dropping a Course…..concentration adviser signature, then me
Pass-Fail/Grade………instructor signature, concentration adviser signature, then me
Cross Reg……………instructor signature, other school’s registrar, then me

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Simultaneous Enrollment: Students ordinarily may not enroll in courses that meet at the same time or overlapping times. Exceptions to this rule are granted by the Administrative Board only in the specific circumstances described on page 51 of the Harvard College Handbook for Students.

Please join us for the first ever “Meet & Greet” with Carlos on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. It will be held in the Small Dining Room from 3pm to 4pm. A nacho bar and refreshments will be served. All students are welcomed!!

Dunster House Opera presents:

The Rake's Progress, by Igor Stravinsky

For its 2009 production, the Dunster House Opera Society presents Stravinsky's neoclassical masterpiece, The Rake's Progress, featuring a poetically brilliant libretto by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman. The opera relates the tale of the wanton Tom Rakewell, who, upon receiving news of a fortune bequeathed him by a forgotten uncle, leaves his lover, Anne Trulove, for London. Accompanied and urged by his mysterious messenger, Nick Shadow, Tom indulges in the many immoral delights of the city, ultimately marrying the bearded wonder, Baba the Turk. As the rake progresses, Nick's plans grow more devilish and lead Tom further away from the possibility of "return" and "love." Can Tom repent before it is too late? The production features a full chamber orchestra and an all-undergraduate cast that wonderfully captures both the musical virtuosity and dramatic magnificence of this burlesque opera.

Performances will be February 13 and 14, all at 8:30pm in Dunster Dining Hall.
