Issue for the Week: Study Cards and Registration
Study Cards are due on this Wednesday, February 4th, by 5 pm. Representatives of the Registrar’s Office will be on hand from 9am-5pm in the Small Dining Room (across from the Dining Hall) to take your study cards. If you do not turn in your study card on Wednesday, you must go directly to the Registrar’s Office to do so. You will be charged $50 per week until it is turned in.
Also be careful to fill out your study card on line correctly. A wrong course number can enroll you in the wrong course, so please be careful. You should also make sure to check your course report after filing your study card.
For those of you who have not registered, you must do so by Wednesday at 11:59. For the week that is passed, you already owe $50, and this goes up every week until registration is complete. If you are having trouble registering for financial or personal reasons, please come by to see me.
Choosing Classes
Just a few words of advice about choosing classes. Try to balance your course-load each semester: a Core or two, some Concentration classes, and an Elective in a different field. While I know this is not news to many of you, it is good that you remind yourself that you are not only here to learn but also to enjoy the process. So, I would discourage taking more than 4 classes (unless requirements are an issue) and unless you were willing to cut down on extra-curriculars.
I have to approve anyone who wishes to take more than 5 classes, by virtue of my signature, so please be prepared to justify why you need six classes. Enjoy shopping week!
Senior Requirements
For those of you graduating this June, you should have received a letter in your mailbox about your remaining requirements and about checking your course report. It is important that you LOOK OVER YOUR COURSE REPORT and return the form by TODAY, Monday, February 2nd, to Melanie in J-35. Please make sure to come to see me if you have any questions.
Add-Drop, Change to Pass-Fail, Cross-Registration and Other Forms
These forms are available in the House Office (J-35). Ask Melanie if you have any other questions.
All of these changes in status require that you get others signatures before you get mine. In the case of adding/dropping a course and changing to or from pass-fail, you need the signatures of your concentration advisors or whoever is responsible for signing study cards and other official documents in your department (adding a course also requires the instructors’ signature). Cross-registration forms require that you get the signature of the instructor AND the registrar for that course, before getting my signature.
If this is a straightforward matter or if we have talked about it before, you may simply drop the forms off at the House Office (to Melanie or in the basket).
Simultaneous Enrollment
Students ordinarily may not enroll in courses that meet at the same time or overlapping times. Exceptions to this rule are rarely granted by the Administrative Board and only in the specific circumstances described on page 51 of the Handbook for Students. Students who have questions about these rules or who wish to enroll in two courses meeting at the same time or overlapping times and think they satisfy the stated conditions should consult with me BEFORE adding a course that creates a conflict.
Grades for the fall term are already available on line. PLEASE check yours carefully and alert me to any problems.

Dunster House Opera presents:
The Rake's Progress, by Igor Stravinsky
For its 2009 production, the Dunster House Opera Society presents Stravinsky's neoclassical masterpiece, The Rake's Progress, featuring a poetically brilliant libretto by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman. The opera relates the tale of the wanton Tom Rakewell, who, upon receiving news of a fortune bequeathed him by a forgotten uncle, leaves his lover, Anne Trulove, for London. Accompanied and urged by his mysterious messenger, Nick Shadow, Tom indulges in the many immoral delights of the city, ultimately marrying the bearded wonder, Baba the Turk. As the rake progresses, Nick's plans grow more devilish and lead Tom further away from the possibility of "return" and "love." Can Tom repent before it is too late? The production features a full chamber orchestra and an all-undergraduate cast that wonderfully captures both the musical virtuosity and dramatic magnificence of this burlesque opera.
Performances will be February 6, 8, 13 and 14 all at 8:30pm in Dunster Dining Hall. Opening night (February 6) is black tie. Dunster residents are invited to attend the final dress rehearsal, for free, at the Dunster Exclusive on Wednesday, Februay 4 at 8:30pm.
