From the Office of the Resident Dean:
Carlos E. Díaz Rosillo

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome back from the Holiday break! I hope that you are all rested and that the New Year brings many blessings. I know that reading and exam period is a stressful time for most of you. Take my recommendation to heart and get perspective on this period. You are meant to study during this time, review information, and finish papers and other writing commitments, which adds up to a lot of work. But please, remember to take care of yourselves both physically and emotionally. If you are feeling unnaturally stressed and want to talk to someone, your tutors and I will be around for emotional support. There are also many University resources --from peer counseling groups to UHS and the Bureau of Study Counsel-- counselors, psychologists and other trained staff whom can help you deal with the stresses of the time or even longer-term issues.

And of course, take a moment to step outside and enjoy life, even in the midst of your busy work lives.

Remember, that no private or suite parties are allowed during reading or exam period, and that music rooms have reduced hours of use. The tutors will be enforcing this policy. Thanks for your cooperation in making Dunster a studious space!

Academic Matters

Final Exams
Double-check your exam schedule, which is available on line at the registrar’s web page at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu, so that you don’t miss an exam. It’s not true that you can miss an exam with no questions asked! If you are likely to be late to an exam, go anyway. If you miss an exam, you should talk to me ASAP.

Extensions
Professors and TFs may grant extensions for papers up until the end of exam period, so it is important that you finish your written assignments by this time. After that date, ONLY the Administrative Board may grant extensions of time for undergraduates to complete course work. This rule also applies to students who are cross-registered in courses elsewhere.

Illness During Exams

If illness prevents you from taking one of your exams on schedule, you may ask the Administrative Board for permission to take a makeup exam in the spring. To do this, you must be seen by a UHS physician or nurse practitioner within the 24-hour period before the exam. In addition, in some cases the Registrar’s staff can administer examinations to students who have been admitted to Stillman Infirmary and who feel ready to take their exam within the 24-hour period following the scheduled time. If you are ill as an exam approaches, call me to talk through the best course of action.

Maude's talk will be the last talk of this discussion series. We hope you can join us. Coffee and cake will be served.

From The Building Manager’s office
Fire exits to corridor doors between suites should always be kept clear. Do not use the corridors or small hallways that exist between some suites for storage.
Holiday Decoration Etiquette
All decorations must be of fireproof material, attached in compliance with Student Handbook guidelines for decorating your suite and arranged so as not to be hazardous in any manner.
Do not hang or attach any decorations to the sprinkler pipes. If a head breaks off or a leak develops in the line, this system is designed to expel water at 30-40 gallons per minute. If it takes 10 minutes or more to secure the shut-off well ...do the math !
Do not block, hide, or camouflage any exit.
All trees 9except synthetic trees) must be anchored in a container of water and checked daily.
Electrical decorations should be inspected for wear and damage BEFORE plugging in. If you suspect a problem or are unsure of the integrity of any decorations, take the time to elicit the advice of the Superintendent.
Candles are dangerous as lovely as their light may be. (there have been at least three fires in Houses caused by candles in the past couple of years.) Candles may not be used in student rooms even for religious purposes!
All Christmas trees must be disposed of by occupants before leaving for the holiday recess. Check with the Superintendent to find out what area of Dunster has been designated for this purpose.

Daniel Kohn is a painter who specializes in interiors and portraits. His work hangs in galleries in the United States, Columbia, France, and the Czech Republic. His piece titled "Seen from above, a place for contemplation" was hung in NYC's Grand Central Station. Currently, he is employed as the artist-in-residence at The Broad Institute in Cambridge. In itself, the fact that the Broad Institute employs an artist-in-residence is remarkable. The Broad is charged with generating data and interpreting information regarding the sequenced genomes of humans and other species. In their wisdom, the administrators of The Broad recognize that science is one of several ways in which information can be interpreted. Daniel Kohn is employed to interpret genomic research through his paintings. He is coming to Dunster House Tuesday night with a blank canvas. For his presentation titled "The Context of Knowledge," Mr. Kohn will create a novel piece and will discuss the relationship between art and science. Coffee and cake will be served. Please join us.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

We host monthly dinners with members of our Dunster community (and sometimes the larger Harvard community) in order to get to know each other and engage in interesting dialogue.

This month, our special guests are own Dunsterites, sophomore Yoseph Ayele, and resident tutor of psychology, Fenna Krienen.

Ever wondered what life was like in Ethiopia or how it feels to be a Dutch transplant growing up in Florida?

Yoseph and Fenna have started reading spy thrillers in order to juice up their life stories for you, and should that should fail to impress you, they have promised to distract you with magic tricks and pictures of cute baby animals.

So, you won't want to miss it!
