Biology Discussion Group Meeting
Small Dining Room, Dunster House
Tuesday, October 28, 7-8:30pm
Please join us!

READ THIS ARTICLE! At the intersection of biology, philosophy, politics, defense, and many other fields of study lies game theory. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, the Dunster Biology Group will host David Rand of Harvard’s Program for Evolutionary Dynamics as he describes his work on game theory published in this outstanding article:

Dreber, A., D.G. Rand, D. Fudenberg, and M.A. Nowak. 2008. Winners don’t punish. Nature 452:348-351.

Abstract: A key aspect of human behaviour is cooperation. We tend to help others even if costs are involved. We are more likely to help when the costs are small and the benefits for the other person significant. Cooperation leads to a tension between what is best for the individual and what is best for the group. A group does better if everyone cooperates, but each individual is tempted to defect. Recently there has been much interest in exploring the effect of costly punishment on human cooperation. Costly punishment means paying a cost for another individual to incur a cost. It has been suggested that costly punishment promotes cooperation even in non- repeated games and without any possibility of reputation effects. But most of our interactions are repeated and reputation is always at stake. Thus, if costly punishment is important in promoting cooperation, it must do so in a repeated setting. We have performed experiments in which, in each round of a repeated game, people choose between cooperation, defection and costly punishment. In control experiments, people could only cooperate or defect. Here we show that the option of costly punishment increases the amount of cooperation but not the average payoff of the group. Furthermore, there is a strong negative correlation between total payoff and use of costly punishment. Those people who gain the highest total payoff tend not to use costly punishment: winners don't punish. This suggests that costly punishment behaviour is maladaptive in cooperation games and might have evolved for other reasons.

Issues for the Week:

The Seventh Monday (October 27th) and Thinking About Classes…
The Seventh Monday of the term is the last day on which students may withdraw from a course (with a grade of “WD”). For those of you who feel overwhelmed by a course, this may be a good option for you. I know that for some of you the fact that you will have a “WD” on your transcript is not a welcome one. However, it might be much better to do well in the other courses in which you are enrolled, than to struggle with a course that is not working out for you. In the end, a WD is better than a poor grade, if you feel you are behind at this stage.

If you need advice about this, feel free to drop by for office hours or to ask me about it when you see me.

"Beyond the Bench, Science Careers Outside of Academia"

Not all biologists perch within the ivory tower. This week, Dr. Nicole Hobbs, a project manager at Novartis Pharmaceuticals, will describe the direction her career has taken. Dr. Hobbs holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and she has applied her skills and training to industrial science rather than taking an academic route. She will describe the pros and cons of The Industrial Option and she will answer questions about paths to a career in non-academic research.

What: Dunster's Biology Discussion Group Meeting #3
Where: Small Dining Room, Dunster House
When: 7pm to 8:30pm, Tuesday, October 7

At Tuesday's meeting, Dunster's Biology Group will host Mr. Matthew Pinckney, a patent lawyer at the firm of Hoffman Warnick LLC. As part of our continuing series, the group will explore a link between biological research and another field of employment. This week, that field of employment is Law. Mr. Pinckney will explain the benefits of training in biology for intellectual property lawyers. Biotechnology is yielding an ever-increasing number of increasingly complex patent applications. Lawyers who are fluent in the vernacular of biotechnology have a significant advantage in the job market. In addition to a discussion of the job market, we will also discuss the ethical implications of patenting biologically engineered materials. Mr. Pinckney's talk offers perspective on a relevant and timely topic in current Biology. Coffee and cake will be served. Please join us.

In 1991, Radcliffe initiated the Radcliffe Research Partnership (RRP) program as part of a commitment to increase the opportunities for undergraduates to work with Radcliffe scholars and staff. It matches undergraduates (junior partners) with Radcliffe scholars (senior partners). It fosters intellectual growth, develops skills, builds confidence, and offers exceptional role models. Nearly five hundred junior partners have participated in the program, working with more than three hundred senior partners. Projects have been in diverse academic disciplines such as science, public policy, gender studies, the humanities, and the arts. Through the program, Harvard undergraduate students come into close contact with talented scholars at Radcliffe, learn of individualized research, and get to work in a job which is more interesting, fulfilling, and exciting.

Issues for the Week

ADD-DROP FORMS

To add or drop a class, pick up an add-drop form outside the House Office on the 3rd floor of J entry-way. If you are adding a class, you need three signatures: the instructor’s, your concentration advisor’s, and mine. If you are dropping a class, you need 2 signatures: your concentration advisor’s and mine. To change the status of a class from to pass-fail, please fill out a change of status form with the signatures of your concentration advisor and mine.

If you do not need to have a conversation with me about your course load, simply drop off the form. I will sign it, date it, and bring it to the Registrar’s each Tuesday. If you prefer to pick it up yourself, please tell Melanie.

ADVICE: Remember to think about balancing your course load this semester. If you are signed up for 5 classes, and this has become a little unmanageable, it will only grow more so with time. So, drop it! If you are enjoying a class and putting a lot of time into it, but signed up to take it pass-fail, you might think about changing it to a graded course; courses cannot be graded retroactively, if you signed up for it as a pass-fail course. If you have any questions, please come by to see me.

SENIOR REQUIREMENTS, STUDENT RECORDS

Seniors, please stop by to see if you would like to confirm that you are on track or just to chat!

NOISE AND PARTIES

School has begun, so it is important that we respect each other’s space and need for quiet time to study. Please remember that although blasting music and being loud is never a good idea for your neighbors, official quiet hours begin at 11 p.m. during the week and 1 a.m. on weekends.

Parties must be registered with the House Office, after receiving approval from your entry-way tutor. These forms, which are located in the House Office, are due by the Thursday at 5 p.m. before the party (for weekend parties) at the House Office. If the office has not received the form by that time, we’ll have to reschedule the party for another week. No exceptions. Plan ahead and plan well. Thanks!

DUNSTER HOUSE MUSIC SOCIETY

Do you play an instrument or sing? Would you like to perform in the Dunster House library or at a Masters' Open House? Are you interested in attending concerts in the Boston area, or taking part in house musical traditions like the annual Messiah Sing? Then get involved in the Dunster House Music Society! We organize concerts for Dunsterites to share their musical talent with the house community, bring in guests to perform for the house (including musicians from the Boston Symphony), sponsor group outings to local concerts, and more. At our kickoff meeting Thursday night (10/2) at 7pm in the JCR, we'll discuss plans for this semester and perhaps form a few ensembles. Performers and nonperformers are welcome! Questions? Can't make the meeting but still want to get involved? Email us at dmusic@hcs.harvard.edu

What is the SCR?
SCR Dinner: October 6th
The Senior Common Room consists of former Masters, Harvard professors and junior faculty, and people outside of Harvard who have been invited to join because of their professions and interest in the House. We love having students attend the SCR dinners which are in October, December, February, and April. The dinners are usually held in the JCR. Because of lack of space students have been invited totally randomly. If a student would like to attend, please contact Nora Dahl at ndahl@fas. We have space for the first fifteen students who respond.

WOULD YOUR MOM OR DAD WANT TO READ DUNSTER'S MOOSELETTER? Send in their names and we'll send them the Mooseletter! Send parents' e-mail addresses to
ndahl@fas.harvard.edu.

FACULTY DINNER-Wednesday, October 29.
Sign up now with your favorite faculty member. Feel free to invite a tutor or the Masters. To sign up e-mail Nora at ndahl@fas.harvard.edu or call her at 5-2262 with your name and the name of the faculty member by Tuesday, October 21. More than one student can sponsor a faculty guest. If your guest cancels at the last minute, don’t worry, you are still more than welcome to join us for dinner. Please let Nora know if you need a vegetarian meal.
This is a very popular event and fills up quickly. The dining hall can only seat so many. Please remember to try to RSVP as soon as possible so to reserve a space for you and guest. Sorry, but we do not have seats enough for students from other Houses.
