Mooseletter – April 20, 2020

From the Office of the Resident Dean, Michael Uy
Deerest Meece, I hope you had a good weekend – in Cambridge, it SNOWED on Saturday (um, excuse me?) and then it was sunny and 61F/16C on Sunday – go figure? It was WONDERFUL to see so many of you at Dunster Trivia Night – the rising sophomore class came with particular gusto! Thank you everyone for coming, and thank you especially to my co-host, Jiho J We enthusiastically congratulate the winners, Team “Forehead Tattoo,” composed of Bella Beckett, Michelle Wang, Claire Fridkin, Janani Krishnan-Jha, and Shriank Kanaparti!!! By my count, they beat out 75 other participants and 20 other teams (yes, it was a big turnout, with deans, tutors, alumni, and students!)! I think it’s worth congratulating as well, the second place team, “Green Eggs and Fam,” a group made of rising sophomores, Kim, Grace, Achele, Oliver, and Max – fantastic job! I hope you all, and many others, come back for the second and final Trivia Night on April 29th – Battle of the Classes edition.
During this last week and a half of classes, we’re wishing you good luck and good effort. As always, you and your loved ones continue to be in our thoughts. We still know that for some of you, things continue to be very difficult, and as well, some of you may be experiencing new loss, new frustration, and new anger because of the latest impacts of COVID19. Let us continue to support one another and reach out to one another. Stay safe, wash your hands carefully, eat and drink healthily, sleep abundantly, and be well. Dunster Love ❤

Dunster House Slack Channel
Dunster now has a Slack channel! Here’s the link

https://harvard-dunster.slack.com

You’ll need to sign on with your Harvard key. We added some channels (#tigerking, #newmeese, #cooking). You’re welcome to add others. (I assume you can do this on your own, but if not, send me the channel suggestion and I’ll go ahead and add it.)

The fine print: As you use the channel, it goes without saying that you should be mindful of community norms, just as you would on the Mooselist. I’ve pasted Slack’s privacy policy below, and you can find the University regulations for the use of electronic resources here.

News and Online College Programs from the ARC
The ARC is offering all programming via Zoom for the remainder of the semester. In addition to the peer tutoring and academic coaching that we always offer, we have implemented more group programming to provide students with opportunities for social interaction during this time of learning remotely.
We encourage everyone to check the ARC website regularly as we are updating our schedule and resources daily. Don’t forget our new Learning Remotely section with advice on how to adapt to and get the most out of our new learning environments.
News
• We’re teaming up with the Harvard College Writing Center! At the Writing Papers from Home workshop (offered 4/16 and 4/21), an ARC coach will discuss strategies for breaking down writing assignments and accounting for changes to the writing process that might come with working away from campus. A Writing Center tutor will be on hand to answer questions about argument, structure, and clarity; test out ideas; and suggest strategies for revision. We’ll also consider how to adapt the research process now that access to libraries is limited. A writing center tutor will also be available during our regular Writing Power Hours to provide individualized writing support in a breakout room.
• We’ve introduced Motivation Station, a daily motivation group that runs Monday-Friday from 3-5pm. Students can stop by to study, post goals, or request a drop-in chat with an Academic Coach.
• Plan Your Week is a regular Sunday evening workshop that helps students figure out what they need to do in the coming week and how to spread their work out over each day, taking into account their own individual circumstances and work preferences.
• New workshops and groups are being added continuously. Expect to see additional programming and resources for Reading Period!
Ongoing Programs
• The Peer Tutoring program is completely online. Students can view available tutors and request tutoring through the peer tutoring page under services.
• The ARC is now hiring Peer Tutors for Fall 2020! Information on eligibility and how to apply is on the student employment page on the ARC website. Deadline for applications is May 1.
• We have expanded Academic Coaching hours from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We have also added services on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Students can sign up for a coaching appointment on the ARC website.
• We’re continuing our online accountability groups for College students, Connect, Learn, and Reflect Power Hours. They now have an intentional focus on reading, writing, or p-sets and are offered every week.

We also have a new Facebook page and Instagram page that we’ll keep updated with our programs.
Students can sign-up to join our mailing list directly here.
Please reach out to us with any questions at academicresourcecenter@harvard.

About hovsep

Hi everyone, my name is Diana Hovsepian and I am the academic coordinator in Dunster House. I have been working here since 2009: helping with your academic questions and issues, managing student records, organizing and helping with House events and Commencement. I also am here to aid you in coordinating your medical school application process and getting your recommendations in order, so please visit me if you have any questions. I also serve as a sophomore academic adviser in the House. Every Monday, I publish the Mooseletter in the dining hall and in your inboxes with news from our offices, which include academic deadlines, upcoming House events, and information from the Registrar’s office. If you find that you have any questions about academics, need to get in contact with the Resident Dean or just want to chat, please email me or stop by my office at E303A! When I am not in Dunster, I am spending time with my husband, our children, and our Boston Terrier in Bedford, MA. I love traveling, reading, watching movies, and I am always on the lookout for recommendations if you have any. Let’s have another great year in Dunster!
