Mooseletter – October 5, 2015

From the Office of the Dean
Carlos E. Díaz Rosillo

Issues for the Week:

TODAY (Monday) is your last chance to add/drop courses or to change the status of courses from or to pass/fail.

Pass/Fail: The form is located in the student’s document center at my.Harvard. You will choose the course and the option, print the form, obtain the signature of the instructor, advisor, and mine. Then the form must be taken to the Registrar’s office.

Add/Drop: Use my.Harvard to add and drop until today- you do not need signatures from me. To add a course you will need instructor permission obtained by requesting permission electronically on my.Harvard.

The Seventh Monday is October 19th. This is the last day in which you may withdraw from a course for the fall term. If you have any questions about this, or still need advice about your course load, please sign up to see me or come by during office hours. To withdraw from a course use the form on the Registrar’s website, obtain the appropriate signatures and turn it into the registrar’s office

Any seniors who wish to go over their status – how many courses they need to graduate, concentration changes, Core requirements, etc. – should feel free to stop by to see me in the coming weeks. It may be helpful for us to have a conversation now, as you enter the middle of the Fall semester.

Katie Anderson
WHERE IS YOUR HOMETOWN?
Franklin, TN (30 minutes south of Nashville)
TELL US SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT WHERE YOU GREW UP.
The Battle of Franklin was the bloodiest battle in the Civil War. I only know this because my childhood best friend’s dad was a Civil War reenactor.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SIBLINGS AND PETS AT HOME?
I have a younger sister, Caroline, who is a hairdresser in Nashville and a younger brother, Tripp, who is a senior in college.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU MISS ABOUT HOME?
So many things! Being close to family, southern accents, a slower pace of life and Mellow Mushroom pizza.
ARE YOU A “MORNING PERSON”?
I used to be, but now that I work in the ER my circadian rhythm is out of whack.
IS THERE A TV SHOW(S) YOU’VE BEEN MEANING TO WATCH?
I am open to suggestions, but I would love to re-watch either The West Wing or Parenthood.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A TUTOR?
Getting the opportunity to be part of an incredible community.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART OF BEING A TUTOR?
I wouldn’t say this is my least favorite part, but the hardest part so far has been learning all the Harvard acronyms. Y’all speak a different language!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HUDS MEAL?
I secretly wish I could be cool enough to be a vegetarian, so I have been enjoying all of the veggie options.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HUDS DESSERT?
The soft serve ice cream is number one in my book.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
What kind of sense of humor they have.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WANT PEOPLE TO NOTICE ABOUT YOU?
I hope I come across as inviting and warm but instead people usually just tell me they are disappointed that I don’t have more of a southern accent.
WHAT KIND OF MOVIES DO YOU LIKE?
Anything that doesn’t involve serfdom, anime or a lot of violence.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ACTORS?
Mindy Kaling, Connie Britton, Jimmy Fallon, anyone on SNL.
WHAT BOOKS HAVE YOU READ RECENTLY THAT YOU RECOMMEND?
I’m reading “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie right now and I can’t put it down.
WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME?
Santorini, Greece.
WHAT IS A HOBBY YOU WISH YOU HAD MORE TIME FOR?
Sewing. I just got a sewing machine and hope to have more time for crafting this year.
TELL US SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS YOU HAVE DONE.
I moved to England 2 weeks after getting married.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HARVARD MEMORY? FAVORITE DUNSTER MEMORY?
I’m new on the Harvard scene, but so far a favorite memory was Jordan’s white coat ceremony at the med school.
WHAT WAS YOUR UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION LIFE LIKE?
I went to Auburn (in Alabama) so football was a huge deal – the town would shut down every Saturday and the campus would be busting with tailgates everywhere. It was a small town, so it was a close knit community which I really loved.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT ALL HARVARD UNDERGRADS TO KNOW (EITHER ABOUT SCHOOL LIFE OR YOURSELF?)
College is an incredible, once in a lifetime phase of life. Enjoy every second! I’m really excited to walk alongside you in this chapter of your life.
TELL US SOMETHING WE PROBABLY DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I have been detained by the UK Border Agency. And have a mug shot (somewhere) to prove it.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT DUNSTER HOUSE?
The students, duh. And the swings in the courtyard.

About hovsep

Hi everyone, my name is Diana Hovsepian and I am the academic coordinator in Dunster House. I have been working here since 2009: helping with your academic questions and issues, managing student records, organizing and helping with House events and Commencement. I also am here to aid you in coordinating your medical school application process and getting your recommendations in order, so please visit me if you have any questions. I also serve as a sophomore academic adviser in the House. Every Monday, I publish the Mooseletter in the dining hall and in your inboxes with news from our offices, which include academic deadlines, upcoming House events, and information from the Registrar’s office. If you find that you have any questions about academics, need to get in contact with the Resident Dean or just want to chat, please email me or stop by my office at E303A! When I am not in Dunster, I am spending time with my husband, our children, and our Boston Terrier in Bedford, MA. I love traveling, reading, watching movies, and I am always on the lookout for recommendations if you have any. Let’s have another great year in Dunster!
