Mooseletter - 4/19/21

From the Office of the Resident Dean, Michael Uy

Deer Meese, just a week and a half of classes and we will be done with this semester! I know I’m not the only one feeling squeezed at all ends, but I hope you are hanging in there and taking care of yourself. I want to recognize the pain and suffering some of you may be feeling, with yet even more examples of brutality last week, with the police murders of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, to the massacre of eight FedEx employees in Indianapolis, including four members of the Sikh community. I’ll admit my own feelings of despair and hopelessness – What can I do? When will it stop? Why are we being killed? Why are others silent? What will it take…? I don’t have the answers, but I also know what it means to me when I’m able to talk with my close friends, or just be in their silent company. In whatever way you can, take care of yourself.

Hopefully, the sun will be kind too (and we won’t have any more freakish snowstorms) and the pollen spores won’t cause us grievous histamine-based misery. At Dunster, the Red Tie “Dinner” will be on Sunday the 25th – we look forward to your predictions for the coming year, and hope you’ve found inspiration in Cheryl’s posts! We’re also looking forward to seniors sharing their groundbreaking thesis research this week. Maybe it can be guidance as you finish out this semester of Zoom learning. By the way, the last day to take a leave of absence for the Spring semester is April 28th – you should definitely be in touch with me if you are thinking along these lines. You should lastly keep an eye out for Fall 2021 enrollment and housing through my.harvard – announcements forthcoming. Dunster Love.

Student Hours: Thursday 11 am-12 noon, 3-4 pm and Friday 2-4 pm ET. Student Hours Zoom Link

Dunster Annual Senior Common Room Red Tie Dinner
Sunday, April 25, 6:30 pm

This is one of Dunster’s oldest and most beloved traditions. Since the 1930’s, Dunsterites have been recording bets in the “Dunster House Betting Book. At some point (1950’s?), this tradition became the semi-annual , and now annual, Red Tie Dinner. Each year, students, staff, and SCR members gather and make bets about what will happen in the coming year, as well as settle bets from the year before. Sadly, this year we will not be able to gather in person. But even if it’s only on zoom, we can’t – especially now – pass up the opportunity to speculate how the coming year will unfold! We hope you can join us for this special virtual twist on an age-old tradition.
