Hello, Dunster! I am Arunima Sarin and I am thrilled to be your Department Adviser and Non-Resident Tutor in Psychology! I am originally from New Delhi, India but over the last five years I have travelled around the world in pursuit of my passion: psychology. I graduated from the University of Delhi in 2013 with a bachelor’s in Psychology, following which, I worked in a rehabilitation home for patients with chronic schizophrenia. In 2014, I went to University College London to pursue a master’s in Research Methods in Psychology and after graduating from there in 2015, I worked alongside Paul Burgess and David Lagnado to explore the impact of conflicting intentions and outcomes on judgments of an agent’s causality and responsibility. In 2016 I moved to Boston to manage Josh Greene’s lab and in the fall of 2017, I started graduate school at the Department of Psychology at Harvard. I am presently a third-year PhD student in Fiery Cushman’s lab where I explore social and moral decision-making. I am particularly interested in punishment and in developing the simplest model of human punishment that can explain punishment as a concept, both at a mechanistic level (which learning systems and brain functions support our decision to punish repeatedly, even when it is costly and often makes us feel bad) and at a functional level (how do we leverage punishment to communicate disapproval and alter a recipient’s behavior). Outside of work, I enjoy reading, hiking, trying out coffee shops, and petting all the doggos I see on the street! I am also a trained dancer, trained in the classical Indian dance form of Kuchipudi. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you think I may have answers for! I look forward to getting to know you all the coming year!
